George Lansbury (1859-1940) was a member of the Poplar Borough Council between 1903 and 1940, Member of Parliament, Privy Councillor and Minister of the Crown. He was also Mayor of Poplar from 1919/20 and 1936/37 and leader of the Labour Party. He was a campaigner for social justice and improved living and employment conditions for the working class, especially in London's East End.

The house which stood on the site of the memorial was his home for 23 years and the garden was created in his memory by public subscription 1955.
