Preventing condensation
Condensation can cause damage to your property
and, in the long run, may cause permanent damage to some parts of
the structure of the building. It is important to take steps to
keep condensation under control.Try these tips at home:
- When cooking, cover pans with lids and keep the kitchen door
closed to stop steam from going into the rest of your home. Make
sure a window is open or the extractor fan is on
- If you use a tumble dryer make sure the steam pipe goes
outside
- If you have to dry clothes indoors ideally put them in the
bathroom with the door closed and the window open or fan on
- Heat all rooms a little bit even if they are not being
used
- Don’t put furniture or things in front of radiators as this
will stop them heating the room properly
- Run cold water into the bath first, then run the hot water.
This will minimise the amount of steam
- After you’ve had a bath or shower open the bathroom window for
a while until the steam has cleared, or use the extractor fan if
you have one
- Don’t switch off or tamper with any extractor fans in your
home.
Looking after your home
- Wipe down the inside of windows if they become wet with
condensation.
- Always keep a small window ajar or vents open when
someone is in the room. It's best to keep the vents open all the
time.
- Try not to put beds and wardrobes against outside walls - mould
is more likely to grow behind furniture.
- Don’t put too many things in wardrobes and cupboards as it
stops the air circulating.
- When redecorating bathrooms and kitchens use a special paint
for these areas.
- Do not use ordinary paint or wallpaper on walls or ceilings
that have been decorated using fungicidal paint.
