All tenants are responsible for insuring their furniture,
belongings and Home Contents Insurance leaflet front cover- links to pdf of home contents insurance leaflet (1.12Mb pdf file)other household contents against fire,
theft, vandalism or water damage such as burst pipes.

Tower Hamlets Homes strongly advises all council tenants to take out home insurance in some form.

You can do this either by making your own private arrangements, or by joining the home contents insurance scheme available to Tower Hamlets Council tenants.

What is covered by the scheme?

Most of your household goods and contents including pedal cycles and computer equipment are insured when in your home. They are covered against loss or damage caused by specific events such as theft, fire and flood. Full details are available on request.

How do you pay?

The cost of the insurance is payable weekly. Premiums can be paid when you pay your rent.

Who can apply?

The scheme is arranged with Royal & Sun Alliance Insurance plc and is available only to Tower Hamlets Council tenants with a clear rent account.

How you can apply for home insurance

Application forms are available from your Local Service Centre, or the Rent Accounts TeamOr you can download an application form here (1.12Mb pdf file).

What happens next?
Once you've completed the application form, return it to: Rent Accounts Team, 2nd Floor Jack Dash House, 2 Lawn House Close, London, E14 9YQ

We will write to you within 5 working days and let you know if your application is accepted. Occasionally, an application will need to be referred to the insurance company for their approval where tenants have answered YES to any of the sections ‘a’ to ‘e’ of question 10. In these cases, we will acknowledge your application and write to you once the decision is made by the insurance company.

Applications will not be accepted from applicants who have rent arrears.

What happens once you have been accepted onto the scheme?

You will receive a policy booklet, schedule and confirmation of the premium and date when you should start paying. To ensure that you are always covered, you must keep all your payments up to date. Failure to keep up payments could affect any claim settlement and may lead to the cancellation of your insurance.
