How your rent is worked out
Your rent is what you pay us to live in your
home.
Rent levels are usually set once a year by
the council, using a government formula and the amount changes at
the beginning of April (the financial year).
Tower Hamlets Homes tell you about the
increase the council has decided by giving you at least four weeks
written notice of any change in the rent, service charge and any
heating or other charges.
Working out your rent
Tower Hamlets Council works out your rent using a same formula
which is set by the government. All councils and registered social
landlords use this formula. The following things are taken into
account when your rent is worked out:
- average manual wages in Greater London
- value of your home
- number of bedrooms in your home
Is my rent different from my neighbours?
If you have more bedrooms than your neighbours, or if
your home is valued higher because, for example, it has a
garden, you could pay more rent than your neighbours.
The rent may be different for identical homes in different
locations, as location is a factor in working out a homes
value.
