Recycling pilot on Berner set for May

Residents on Berner are to be the first in Tower Hamlets to try out a new recycling pilot, encouraging everyone to recycle more.

The trial, which sets out to meet the collection needs of each block, will involve your local caretaking team much more in the collection of pink recycling sacks.

How will these changes affect me?

From Monday 17th May we will be changing collection systems in some blocks of flats to make it easier and safer for you to recycle.  You will receive information about the type of collection scheme that will be introduced in your block over the next couple of weeks.

recycle bags If you receive a doorstep collection, you’ll need to place your recycling outside your front door every Tuesday  by 7am.

recycle on floorOr, if you have a mini recycling point on your floor, take your pink sacks to your mini recycling point located near the lifts, at any time.

recycle ground floorOr, if you have a communal recycling bin, drop off your pink sack at your nearest communal recycling bin.

Your local caretaker will collect any pink sacks from your doorstep and mini recycling points and take them to the communal recycling points on the ground floor.

We’re also improving the appearance of the communal recycling points. This will make it more convenient for residents to recycle, particularly those in blocks where doorstep or mini recycling collections are not possible.

Won’t this tie up caretakers and stop them from doing their day to day job?

In return for helping collect the pink sacks, Veolia Environmental Services, the council’s recycling contractor, will clean the estate roads. This will free up caretakers’ time, allowing them to collect the pink sacks as part of their normal, day to day job.

As caretakers work in your area every day, they’ll be able to watch out for any pink sacks set out incorrectly, and remove them quickly. They will also be on hand to answer any questions you may have about recycling. So everybody wins.

Where can I get more information?

Tower Hamlets Homes, Veolia Environmental Services and Tower Hamlets Council will be talking to residents on the estate between the 13th and 15th May to tell you more about the new pilot scheme, provide you with recycling bags and answer any questions you might have.

You can also catch your recycling team at your Neighbourhood Action Day. Why not pop along and let them know your views about the new pilot?

You can get more information by contacting Tower Hamlets Council on 020 7364 5004 or talking to your Neighbourhood Housing Officer.
