Tower Hamlets Homes has been
shortlisted in two categories out of more than 240 entries to the
2011 UK Housing Awards.
The UK Housing awards are run by the Chartered Institute of Housing
and sponsored by Inside Housing, recognising excellence in public
housing, improving the lives of people in their communities.
Tower Hamlets Homes was shortlisted in the
‘Valuing equalities and diversity’ category, for their work on
financial inclusion for Somali residents, and in the 'Meeting
residents' needs and aspirations' category for our approach to
Neighbourhoods.
The Somali Financial Inclusion Project was
developed to address high rent arrears amongst Somali tenants
living in Tower Hamlets. Tower Hamlets Homes developed a
partnership with local community organisations to target Somali
tenants in arrears. To date, 71 Somali households have been
supported since January 2011, which has resulted in a £12k
reduction in arrears.
The Neighbourhood approach showcased Tower
Hamlets Homes’ dedicated team for each of their 27 neighbourhoods,
dealing with all housing management issues, and delivering each
area’s Neighbourhood Action Plan.
Gavin Cansfield, Chief Executive at Tower
Hamlet Homes said: "We're delighted to be shortlisted for these
awards. We want to provide the best housing services in Tower
Hamlets by 2014 and this shows us that we are on the right
track."
