'Stars' in the community honoured at awards ceremony

Thirteen residents
from Tower Hamlets were crowned ‘Star in the Community’ last
week (21/11/11) at an award ceremony held at the East
Wintergarden, in Canary Wharf.
The STAR awards, organised by 8 housing
associations in Tower Hamlets as well as Tower Hamlets Homes, were
a chance for fellow residents to nominate their ‘local heroes’ for
making difference to their neighbourhood.
Nominations could be for community volunteers
who spent time, doing something which benefits their community or
for being an active member of a community group, organising events
for fellow residents or supporting and helping other individuals in
the area.
Tower Hamlets Homes’ residents and community
volunteers, Sybil Yates and Mamun Rashid, scooped an award each for
Inspirational Resident and Bringing People Together.
The winners were selected by a panel of
independent resident judges.

MP, and guest speaker at the event said: ‘It’s great that
residents’ achievements are being recognised. Without the work of
these inspirational people the borough would not be the fantastic
place it is today.’
The STAR in the Community awards is supported

Housing Association, One Housing Group, Poplar HARCA, Spitalfields
Housing Association, Swan Housing Association, Tower Hamlets
Community Housing and Tower Hamlets Homes.
