Nahimul Islam, a member of
the Tower Hamlets Homes Youth Panel, has
been elected Tower Hamlets Young Mayor 2011.
Nahimul, 15, fought off 17 other hopeful
candidates who put themselves forward for the role of Young
Mayor.
His deputies will be 15 year old, Tasmina
Khanum of Bow and Nadeem Miah, also 15, of Brick Lane.
Young people aged 11 to 18 who live, work
or study in the borough cast their vote on Tuesday (January 25) at
official polling stations in secondary schools, youth clubs and
Idea Stores. The turn out was reported to be 52.43%.
The Young Mayor and his deputies will
represent the young people of Tower Hamlets and play an important
role in ensuring the powers-that-be listen to the views of the
younger generation.
Nahimul, from Wapping, is involved in the
Youth Council and Youth Opportunity Fund and his priorities as
Young Mayor are narrow the attainment gap through accreditations,
help young people into education, training and work through Olympic
volunteering and jobs and improve community relations.
Nahimul told Tower Hamlets Homes: “It means the world to
become Young Mayor as for the next 2 years I will be representing
all young people in the borough and carrying out decisions
affecting everyone. It’s a great feeling, but it’s a big job
with great responsibility which I’m willing to carry forward to
improve the lives of the youth.”
