Clearing away rubbishYou have been telling us that you would like cleaner neighbourhoods, so we’ve been looking at how best to deal with the rubbish which gets dumped on our estates every day.

Last year, we removed 2,000 tonnes of dumped waste and it cost over £90 per tonne in disposal costs!  That’s a lot of money to spend on rubbish! There were also 811 refuse fires. That’s over 2 every single day! Dumping waste in communal areas could see you issued with a Civil penalty notice fine.

So with this in mind, we’ve been looking at ways in which we can all dispose of bulky waste items - things like sofas, tables, beds, fridges, washing machines – safely, and most of them are FREE!

Streetline

Did you know as a resident of Tower Hamlets you are allowed 2 free bulk waste collections per year? And if you are a senior citizen or disabled there is no limit. You can ask for as many bulk waste collections as you need.

To arrange your FREE collection call the council’s Streetline service on 020 7364 5004.  Items should only be left out on the day of collection. Maximum of 5 items per collection.

Don’t bin it, recycle it!

If your old furniture or white goods can be re-used why not consider giving them to charity so that they can be recycled and given to those in need? Many local organisations will recycle unwanted furniture and offer it to sell it at low cost to those in need.
