Horwood Estate receives £80,000 lighting
upgrade
Lighting scheme to
deter vandals
An £80,000 lighting upgrade to Horwood, Newcourt and Nordon
Houses on Horwood estate is set to finish by the end of March
2009.
The works, funded by the council and carried out by Tower
Hamlets Homes, involve the installation of new energy efficient
lighting on staircases and outside each residents’ front door.
There’s also new floodlighting on the first floor balcony wall; and
a number of lighting columns have been installed around the paths
and car parks serving the estate.
Lighting projects are about making residents feel safe in their
neighbourhoods, as well as helping to deter anti-social
behaviour.
Residents at Horwood Estate have told us that even now they are
feeling much safer at night and genuinely appreciate how much the
extra lighting installed so far has improved the area.
Bethnal Green and South Ward Councillor and Deputy Leader of the
council Sirajul Islam recently visited Horwood Estate and said
the lighting improvement works so far had made a significant
difference to the area.
He said: "In the past when I have visited in the evening the
whole area looked dark and gloomy but just recently when I visited,
I felt safe and secure talking to residents at 9pm. The residents I
spoke to also appreciate the lighting improvements."
