Demolition contractors moved into the
Ocean estate last week to start knocking down Aden House - the
first of eleven blocks to make way for a new housing redevelopment
programme. Over 700 new and replacement homes are being
built with a further 1,200 homes being refurbished.
The Ocean estate has been home to generations of families in the
East End since the 1950’s. Tower Hamlets council’s housing lead
councillor Marc Francis said: ”It has been one of the council’s
priorities for redevelopment for a number of years. It’s fantastic
to see the demolition works finally underway and the prospect of
new development just around the corner.”
The redevelopment is part of Tower Hamlets
council’s urban regeneration programme and is being delivered in
partnership with Tower Hamlets Homes, Housing and Communities
Agency and Ocean New Deal for Communities.
Tower Hamlets Homes’ Chief Executive, Gavin
Cansfield said: “We are committed to improving homes
and making a difference to the neighbourhoods residents live
in. We are really excited to be part of this project, which will
deliver better homes and better community facilities for hundreds
of families.”
More than £16 million of New Deal for
Communities money in addition to substantial council
funding will be invested into the project, which will cost
more than £200 million. Over a fifth of this is to be
sought from the Homes and Communities Agency as well
as further funding from the private sector.
