What is an
Orchard?
An orchard is an area with one or more fruit trees.
Why create
orchards?
- Tower Hamlets Homes residents have
told us that they want to be more involved in food growing projects
and schemes
- To improve the environment and create
more sustainable food sources
- To utilise under-used green
spaces
How will the project be
funded?
Tower Hamlets Homes have some funds
for residents to apply to called the You Make A Difference Today
fund.
Where can orchards be
planted?
On under-used green areas within
neighbourhoods managed by Tower Hamlets Homes.
When will the orchards be planted?
Fruit trees planting season is from
October - March.
Which fruit varieties will be
planted?
This is for the residents to decide,
however apples, peaches, plums, greengages and damsons are
recommended for popularity and ease of growing.
Who will take care of
them?
The trees will planted and cared for
by local residents.
How much work will the
orchards need?
Short-term
Long-term
- Pruning (once a year)
- Watering (mainly during summer)
- Mulching & weed control
- Keeping watch to prevent
vandalism
Who will the fruit belong
to?
For enclosed orchards, Orchard Care Groups will get the first
chance to pick, distribute and/or sell the fruit grown.
For open orchards, the fruit will be
free to the public.
How will you prevent ASB and
vandalism?
- Tree guards and stakes to protect
trees
- Orchard Care Groups to act as neighbourhood watch
