The Mayor of Tower Hamlets, Lutfur Rahman has said that housing is his number one priority.

‘Decent Homes’ is a national standard that means all homes should have modern facilities, be warm and weatherproof.

“I am determined to make sure that all residents in the borough can live in a home of a decent standard. Despite the considerable financial difficulties facing the Council, I have decided to make enough funding available to bring every Council home in Tower Hamlets up to a decent standard by 2015. Bringing all houses up to a decent standard could cost up to £165 million, which will be covered using a combination of Central Government funding and our own resources.”

Most tenants’ homes included in the four year programme will receive a new kitchen and bathroom, plus re-wiring or heating works, and some blocks will also benefit from external improvements.

All tenants will be offered a choice in the works that they have done to their homes, and be given every opportunity to let us know how they think things are going and how we can improve.

Tower Hamlets Homes manages housing services for Tower Hamlets Council.
