Berner, Ellen Street

The Community Garden on the Berner estate was
established in 1999 by staff at the Wapping Womens Centre.
Staff noticed that residents were growing
vegetables in pots on their balconies and following negotiation and
funding support from LBTH, the garden was set up on a redundant
piece of land opposite Kindersley House.
It is now thriving, with 26 members with a
plot each, another plot being used by a girls group, and another
plot used for compost.
Not only has this project brought women
together it has increased their self-confidence, given them a voice
and they are all trained Eco-champions. The group now swap seeds,
swap recipes and have ‘fruity beauty’ sessions with cucumber face
masks.
