On Friday 2 August the Mayor of Tower Hamlets, John Biggs and Tower Hamlets Homes' (THH) chief executive Susmita Sen, launched the THH Summer Youth Programme in Shadwell Gardens.

The programme places youth workers on THH estates where they will work with young people and provide a range of recreational activities as well as encouraging them to take part in schemes provided by the council and others.

The summer holidays see increases in anti-social behaviour and youth on youth violence and are a crucial time to provide diversionary activities. Many families on low incomes in the borough struggle to provide fun things for their children to do in summer and almost all the activities in the programme are free, with the rest having a nominal charge.

THH has commissioned seven youth and community organisations who to provide a five-week summer holiday programme using funding from Tower Hamlets Council.  The seven organisations are:

•             Society Link, covering Shadwell and Wapping
•             Vallance Community Sports Association, covering Globe Town
•             Osmani Trust, covering Chicksand and Collingwood
•             Newark Youth, covering Whitechapel and Stepney
•             Ocean Youth Connexions, covering Malmesbury and St Stephens estate
•             Neighbours in Poplar & Splash, covering Poplar and Limehouse
•             St Hilda’s Centre, covering the Boundary estates in Shoreditch

They will provide activities ranging from water-sports, to arts projects and day trips.

Tower Hamlets Homes’ chief executive Susmita Sen said: “Reducing anti-social behaviour is our top priority. The summer programme will get young people involved in activities and will ensure they are kept busy during the summer break.  It will divert young people into positive activities.”

Mayor of Tower Hamlets, John Biggs, said: “We have one of the best funded youth services in London and over the summer we will be running a series of free summer activities.  The aim is to keep young people engaged and to ensure they invest their time and energy in a positive way. Providing young people with positive opportunities will help reduce anti-social behaviour.”
