Barnardo’s ran hundreds of children’s homes across the UK from Thomas Barnardo’s day until the 1970’s. No. 18 Stepney Causeway was opened in December 1870 as a home for working and homeless boys. Today, as one of the UK's leading children's charities, Barnardo's works directly with over 100,000 children, young people and their families every year. They still run vital projects across the UK, including counselling for children who have been abused, fostering and adoption services, vocational training and disability inclusion groups.
